DAN AND BETH
This project is driven by a method set up to derive content from an outside source rather than conceptualizing an idea from scratch. I knew that I wanted the project to relate to my parents and my upbringing, so I began with my parents' names. I took each letter of their names and found dictionary entries in relation to each letter's placement in the alphabet (for example, D is the fourth letter of the alphabet, so I went to the fourth entry on the fourth page of the D section). Once I had all the words, I created imagery that connected the words to my parents, my upbringing, and my childhood. I then began to connect the images that related to each other and laid out each set of imagery in a poster. The result was three screen printed posters that feature illustrations in combination with the definitions, page numbers, and vernacular from the dictionary I used.
