RENAISSANCE BLACK
Renaissance Black is an experimental typeface created using a starched cheesecloth called tarlatan. The cloth is used in intaglio printmaking to wipe excess ink off copper etching plates. The tarlatan I used was what I had left over from several etchings, so it was stained black from the ink. The idea of the typeface is to combine a formal design element (typography) with a procedural printmaking element (tarlatan). The letterforms were created and photographed on an old light table to highlight the use of light tables in both printmaking and graphic design, while the title Renaissance Black comes from the name of the black ink that the tarlatan is stained with.
